Yinchuan University of Energy (hereinafter referred to as "the university") is located in Yinchuan, the capital city of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The school was founded in 1999 and invested by Ningxia Baota Petrochemical Group Co., Ltd. In 2004, the Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region officially approved the establishment of Yinchuan Vocational College of Science and Technology. In 2012, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to be upgraded to a general undergraduate university with the name of Yinchuan University of Energy. In 2016, it was authorized to confer bachelor's degree. In 2019, the organizer of the school was changed to Sichuan Hope Education Industry Group Co., Ltd.

The University has 11670 full-time students, including 7541 undergraduate students and 5 overseas students. There are 637 teachers in total, 442 full-time teachers, among which 143 teachers are titled associate senior or above, accounts for 32.35%; 287 teachers are with master or doctorate degree, accounts for 64.93%; and 156 of them are "double-qualified" teachers, accounts for 35.29%.

The University has three campuses: Wangtai Campus, Binhe Campus and Hequanhu Campus. It has a complete system of teaching, laboratory, training and public service. The campus covers an area of 9806,600 square meters, with a total construction area of 371,400 square meters (including Binhe Campus of 114,400 square meters). The teaching and administrative buildings are of 189,000 square meters, 16.22 square meters per student. There are 195 laboratory and training rooms, and the total value of teaching and scientific researching instruments is 85,030,700 yuan, with an average of 7,133.39 yuan per student. The library has a collection of 966,600 books, with an average of 81.09 books per student.

The university has 12 secondary schools and 2 teaching departments, offering 34 undergraduate majors, covering 8 disciplines such as engineering, management, economics and literature etc. There are 1 characteristic discipline of autonomous region-level, 1 key discipline, 1 characteristic major, 3 key (fostered) developing majors, 5 demonstration majors under the integration of education and industry, 7 first-class undergraduate major construction point, 3 laboratory teaching demonstration centers and 3 college students off-campus practical education bases. Through years of development for disciplines and majors, the university has formed its characteristics with energy and chemical engineering as the key points.

In its 21 years of development, under the leadership of Ningxia Hui autonomous region party committee and government, driven by the concern and support of Education Department of Ningxia, Yinchuan and all walks of life, the University adheres to the developing of applied talents, the serve to the local economic and social development as the school-running orientation. Under the motto of “For virtue and intelligence, to seek truth and taking action.”, the University implements the development strategy of “to build the university on education quality, to develop the university by characteristic schooling, and to strengthen the university by talents development". The University keeps up with the market demand, actively promotes university-enterprise cooperation, continuously deepens the integration of industry and education, and actively integrates into the political, economic, cultural, social and ecological civilization construction of Ningxia. It has cultivated more than 30,000 graduates, of which about 70% are employed in Ningxia. In order to support the national policy of targeted poverty alleviation, the university actively carries out various vocational skills training and appraisal for enterprises, urban and rural areas. It has helped more than 13,000 employees of enterprises, urban and rural labor forces. The university actively carries out cooperation in running schools with foreign countries, and has established long-term and stable cooperative relations with 12 foreign universities, making significant contributions to the foreign exchange and cooperation of higher education in Ningxia.

The University has been awarded “Special Contribution for Economic Development of Yinchuan Award” by Yinchuan Government, “The Fourth Session of the National Education Reform and Innovation Excellence Award” by China Education Newspaper and “National Award for Innovation Entrepreneurship Education Practice Training Base Construction” by the Chinese Association for Non-Government Education. It is also listed in the innovation base project of Ministry of Education and ZTE ICT, serving as the director unit of Association of Universities (Colleges) of Applied Science, the university built with the assistance of Fuzhou University under Ningxia-Fujian Cooperation, and the pilot university for the transformation and development of local undergraduate universities in Ningxia.
